Bombs hit 2 Pakistani cities, killing 9

LAHORE, Pakistan – A suicide bomber blew himself up near a march by minority Shiite Muslims in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on Tuesday, killing at least nine people and wounding dozens, many of them security officers, officials said.

A second bomb blast, also apparently targeting Shiites, wounded six in the southern city of Karachi.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Lahore attack, which laid bare the challenges facing Pakistani officials trying to secure cities far from the northwest where the militants have long thrived. Many recent attacks have targeted minority Muslim and other religious groups.

Thousands of Shiite worshippers were marking the end of a 40-day mourning period for the Islamic sect's most beloved saint when the blast hit their procession early Tuesday evening. The bomber is believed to have been a young teenage boy, said senior police official Aslam Tareen. He said nine people died in the blast.

The suspected bomber was around 14 years old and was carrying a bag as he tried to reach the marchers, but police would not let him in without a body search, said Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah. He then set off his explosives at the security cordon, officials said.

"We should salute the police officials who laid down their lives but did not let the bomber in the procession," Sanaullah said.

Footage from the scene showed ambulances racing to the area and men carrying away victims. One young man whose arm was apparently hurt screamed as he was placed on a stretcher. A white car caught up in the explosion was largely destroyed, its hood twisted upward. A man lay wounded on the ground with two women and a child weeping beside him.

Dr. Zahid Pervaiz at the city's Mayo Hospital told reporters that 10 dead bodies had come in, while another 52 people were wounded.

Shakirullah Shakir, a spokesman for the Fidayeen-e-Islam wing of the Pakistani Taliban, told The Associated Press in a phone call that the militant group had dispatched the bomber and warned of more such bombings.

Later Tuesday evening, a bomb exploded near a group of people returning from a Shiite march in the Malir neighborhood of Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. Karachi police chief Fayaz Leghari said officials were trying to determine the exact nature of the blast.

Attacks roughly tripled last year in Lahore and Karachi, according to a recent report by the Islamabad-based Pak Institute for Peace Studies.

The trend is a sign that militants are having greater success exporting the fight far from their northwest heartland along the Afghan border. The Pakistani army, under U.S. pressure, has carried out several offensives against militants in its northwest, but violence persists.

'The King's Speech' gets 12 Oscar nominations

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – The British monarchy saga "The King's Speech" leads the Academy Awards with 12 nominations, including best picture and acting honors for Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush.

Also nominated for best picture Tuesday were the psychosexual thriller "Black Swan"; the boxing drama "The Fighter"; the sci-fi blockbuster "Inception"; the lesbian-family tale "The Kids Are All Right"; the survival story "127 Hours"; the Facebook chronicle "The Social Network"; the animated smash "Toy Story 3"; the Western "True Grit"; and the Ozarks crime thriller "Winter's Bone."

"True Grit" ran second with 10 nominations, including acting honors for Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld.

The Feb. 27 Oscars set up a best-picture showdown between two favorites, "The King's Speech" and "The Social Network." "The Social Network" won best drama at the Golden Globes and was picked as the year's best by key critics groups, while "The King's Speech" pulled an upset last weekend by winning the Producers Guild of America Awards top prize, whose recipient often goes to claim best picture at the Oscars.

"This story has struck such a rich resonant chord with audiences of all ages, which is very exciting — to have your work honored by your industry peers is even better," Rush said in a statement.

The favorites in the male-acting categories both were nominated, Globe winners Firth as best actor for "The King's Speech" and Christian Bale as supporting actor for "The Fighter."

The best-actress field shapes up as a two-woman race between Annette Bening for "The Kids Are All Right," who won the Globe for actress in a musical or comedy, and Natalie Portman for "Black Swan," who received the Globe for dramatic actress.

The supporting-actress Oscar could prove the most competitive among acting prizes. Melissa Leo won the Globe for "The Fighter," but she faces strong challenges from that film's co-star Amy Adams and 14-year-old newcomer Steinfeld, who missed out on a Globe nomination for "True Grit" but made the cut for supporting actress at the Oscars.

The Social Network" casts Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who's depicted as an interpersonal lout in one-on-one relations but a genius for the masses, creating an online hangout where half a billion people now keep connected with friends.

"The King's Speech" stars Firth as Queen Elizabeth II's father, the stammering George VI, who reluctantly came to the throne after his brother abdicated in 1936, a terrible time for a stuttering monarch as British subjects looked to their ruler for inspiration via radio as World War II approached.

The two films represent a showdown between classy, traditional Oscar bait and edgy, youthful, up-to-the-minute drama.

With its aristocrats, statesmen and perilous times, "The King's Speech" is a throwback to the majestic, eye-filling costume pageants that dominated film awards in Hollywood's earlier decades. Its nominations also include best director for Tom Hooper and supporting-acting slots for Bonham Carter as the king's devoted wife and Rush as his wily speech therapist.

"The Social Network" is an immediate story, set not in palaces but college dorm rooms, cluttered start-up space and anonymous legal offices where Zuckerberg battles former associates over the proceeds of his invention.

David Fincher is the best-directing favorite for "The Social Network" after winning that prize at the Globes.

"My recommendation to anybody who wants to get an Oscar nomination is, work with David Fincher. It was just a triumph of teamwork," Aaron Sorkin, nominated for best adapted screenplay for "The Social Network," said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Along with Firth and Eisenberg, best-actor contenders are Javier Bardem as a dying father in the Spanish-language drama "Biutiful," which also is up for best foreign-language film; Bridges as boozy lawman Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit," a role that earned John Wayne an Oscar for the 1969 adaptation of the Western novel; and James Franco in the real-life tale of a climber trapped in a crevasse after a boulder crushes his arm in "127 Hours."

Bening was nominated for best actress as a lesbian mom whose family is thrown into turmoil after her teenage children seek out their sperm-donor father in "The Kids Are All Right." Portman was nominated as a ballerina losing her grip on reality in "Black Swan."

Other best-actress nominees are Nicole Kidman as a grieving mother in "Rabbit Hole"; Jennifer Lawrence as a teen trying to find her missing father amid the Ozark Mountains' criminal underbelly in "Winter's Bone"; and Michelle Williams as a wife in a failing marriage in "Blue Valentine."

Joining Fincher among best-director picks are Darren Aronofsky for "Black Swan"; Joel and Ethan Coen for "True Grit"; Tom Hooper for "The King's Speech"; and David O. Russell for "The Fighter."

One notable snub was the omission of director Christopher Nolan for "Inception," though he got a nod for original screenplay. Nolan also missed out on a directing Oscar nomination for "The Dark Knight," which was famously not nominated for best picture.

The directing category is back to an all-male lineup after Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win that prize last year for "The Hurt Locker," which also claimed best picture.

Bale, the star of Nolan's "Batman" franchise, is a strong favorite to win supporting actor as former boxer Dicky Eklund, who helps his half-brother to a title shot after his own career unraveled amid drugs and crime in "The Fighter." The film's star, Mark Wahlberg, missed out on a nomination as Eklund's half-brother, boxer Micky Ward.

Two years ago, Bale's "Batman" co-star, the late Heath Ledger, was on the same awards track as he won a posthumous Oscar for supporting actor for "The Dark Knight."

"The Fighter" offers two sterling supporting-actress performances from Leo as Ward and Eklund's doting but domineering mother and Adams as Ward's tough, defiant girlfriend. Steinfeld, who was just 13 when she shot her debut performance in "True Grit," also is a strong contender as a girl who hires lawman Cogburn to track down her father's killer.

"Toy Story 3," the top-grossing film released in 2010, also is nominated for animated feature and is expected to become the fourth-straight winner in that category from Disney's Pixar Animation, following "Up," "WALL-E" and "Ratatouille." Pixar has won five of the nine animation Oscars since the category was added.

The other animation nominees are "How to Train Your Dragon" and "The Illusionist."

While two of the three animated categories are huge commercial successes, the best-picture race is a mix of big commercial hits and smaller critical darlings, which is what academy organizers wanted when they expanded the competition to 10 films.

Like "Toy Story 3," "Inception" is a blockbuster, coming from director Nolan, whose "The Dark Knight" missed out on a best-picture nomination two years ago, contributing to the decision to double the number of contenders so that acclaimed popular movies would have a better chance.

"True Grit" is the first $100 million Western hit since the 1990s, "The Social Network" climbed to about $95 million in revenue, and "Black Swan" is closing on $100 million. At the other end are "Winter's Bone" with $6.3 million and "127 Hours" with $11 million, respectable returns for lower-budgeted independent films but small change next to big studio productions.

Besides Leo, Adams, Bonham Carter and Steinfeld, Jacki Weaver earned a supporting-actress nomination as a crime family matriarch in the Australian thriller "Animal Kingdom."

Rounding out the supporting-actor field with Bale and Rush are John Hawkes as a backwoods tough guy in "Winter's Bone"; Jeremy Renner as a holdup man in the bank-heist thriller "The Town"; Mark Ruffalo as a sperm-donor dad in "The Kids Are All Right."

The Oscar ceremony will be televised live on ABC from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

This road sign has been hacked to read 'Zombies Ahead.' According to i-hacked.com, it is fairly easy to break into the programmable digital signs' electronics and re-program the text on them.

We see them everywhere these days, digital signs by the side of the road telling us about road conditions or that we should prepare to stop or that our local bridge might be closed next Tuesday from noon to midnight. And if you're like me, you've always just assumed that the message on the signs is legitimate and properly authorized.

But what if the sign, instead of reading something like "Ice Ahead" was flashing the message, "Zombies Ahead"?

It's true that in San Francisco or a few other cities, such a sign could be put up by local transportation officials to warn people of an impending zombie march, but even in those places, the more likely explanation would be that the sign was hacked.

And if you're in the Boston area and saw signs hacked in this way, there's always a decent chance it was done by students from MIT.

According to the blog i-hacked.com, some programmable road signs are easily messed with, largely because they often have unlocked instrument panels, a text-entry system that is easily accessed, and are often protected with uncomplicated, or unchanged default passwords.

"Programming is as simple as scrolling down the menu selection to 'Instant Text,'" i-hacked reported. "Type whatever you want to display, (and) hit 'enter' to submit. You can now either throw it up on the sign by selecting 'Run w/out save' or you can add more pages to it by selecting 'Add page.'"

Of course, you probably don't want to do this in plain view of any law enforcement officials, and i-hacked led its post with a disclaimer warning against ever performing this hack. So here at Geek Gestalt, we'll just say that it's interesting that this could be such an easy thing to do and leave it at that.

We’re opening this list up with the impossible to forget Caprica Six of Battlestar Galactica. Filling this sexy role, and the form-fitting wardrobe that comes with it, is Canadian super-model and actress Tricia Helfer. Needless to say, when she first walked in to audition for the show, impressions were made. She’s now widely credited with managing to drill the idea of a human robot even further into acceptance than any actor before her — while pitching more tents than REI.

Ask 20 people what they thought of Rise of the Machines, and you’ll get roughly 18 negative responses. It was not a well-liked member of the popular Terminator franchise. Barring the invariable nay-saying, people still watch it, multiple times, largely due to Kristanna Loken’s portrayal of the mercilessly hot T-X. Up until she came along, the only sex we ever knew of in the series was the iconic, piano-laden, “I just made a pipe-bomb” moment from the original… Many childhood memories were built on it.

Rachael – Blade Runner

The Bikini Machine – Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine

One of the originals, the Bikini Machine was in fact the inspiration for the Fembots in the Austin Powers movies. Ironically enough, Dr. Goldfoot was a parody of its James Bond contemporary, Goldfinger. None of that really matters anyway, since the movie is about hot robot chicks whose sole uniform is a gold bikini.

False Maria – Metropolis

Here we’re diving all the way back to 1927, and the actual dawn of the fembot — with Metropolis. This film is so old that it’s silent, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the greatest sci-fi masterpieces of all time. The movie may have been filmed in the Roaring 20’s but the special effects and storyline were decades ahead of their time. The love-interest of the hero, Maria, gets replaced by the hero’s father with an evil robotic doppleganger. As you can probably guess, this leads to mass mayhem, chaos, and sexual frenzy. If you haven’t ever seen this gem, get on it.

The Fembots – Austin Powers

Austin Powers made waves with its inclusion of the highly ridiculous Fembots when it was first released, not because they were too naughty, but because they just weren’t done that often. The movie drew inspiration from all the way back to 1965, with the afore-mentioned Dr. Goldfoot. Even if they are mindless sex-assassins, we still love ‘em.

Cameron – The Sarah Connor Chronicles

First whipping the nerd world into a frenzy as River in Firefly, Summer Glau rocked our world in The Sarah Connor Chronicles when she showed up as Cameron. Showing that all interested parties learned a valuable lesson when Kristanna Loken was tapped for the T-X role, Glau was guaranteed to be a smash-hit as a young, tormented, human-like terminatrix. Considering that most fans universally agreed that the show was nothing near expectations, it’s reasonable to assume that her character was a big reason for continued viewing.

Seven of Nine – Star Trek Voyager

Any and all fans of Star Trek: TNG maintain a timeless love for the Borg, and when the Voyager leg of the franchise introduced a young, busty Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, the universe was thankful. While not technically a robot, the whole Borg thing certainly qualifies her for cyborg status, and if that’s good enough for Robocop, then it’s good enough for us.

Lisa – Weird Science

Another cloudy affiliation, Lisa from Weird Science isn’t known to consist of any circuitry or gears, but she was made on a computer, so we’re giving her the benefit of the doubt. Played by Kelly LeBrock, Lisa spiced up the lives of every geek in the world when she hit the screens in 1985. While her powers were more on the side of pure magic than those of an actual robot, she was the most badass, logically-thinking chick the ’80s ever saw in micropanties. Go refresh your memory.

Lt. Ilia – Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Blowing up theaters nationwide in 1979, Star Trek made its big-screen debut in a big way. Not only was the story huge, but we got to feast our eyes on the amazingly short skirt found on a young Lt. Ilia, who we later found out to be a robot in disguise. She may have been sporting the Sinead O’Connor look, but she pulled it off. With her around, not even V’ger was scary.

Rhoda – My Living Doll

It’s a shame that this show only ran for less than a year. Back in 1964, Julie Newmar became the world’s hottest robot by default when she signed on to play Rhoda in My Living Doll. The monstrously hot fembot was intended for service in the Air Force, but her creator didn’t want her living the military life and sabotaged the project. Rhoda, in all her beauty, was left in an amnesiac state, and the show immediately began to feel like Bewitched or I Dream of Genie as she became just another gorgeous (but dumb) house-fixture.

Cherry – Cherry 2000

Set in post-apocalyptic America, Cherry 2000 introduced us to a Johnny Mnemonic-type world with sex-model gynoids, and more morality than you can shake a stick at. This movie was rife with sex, and in fact was based on the premise that a romp in the bath-water will ruin your brand new sex robot. Always keep your equipment dry.

Jaime Sommers – The Bionic Woman

Lindsay Wagner may spend her days yammering on about the Sleep Number Bed, but back in 1976 she was playing Jaime Sommers, The Bionic Woman. She was also a mega-hottie, could run up to 60 mph, and could bend steel with her bare (bionic) arms. Beat that.

Annalee Call – Alien Resurrection

One of very few memorable pieces of the fourth installment in the Alien series, Call was a breath of fresh air. Played by Winona Ryder, she was a deep-cover android sent to kill Ripley — for the good of humanity. Call wasn’t just an android though, she was a rebel android, and a trouble-maker to boot. The boy-cut works surprisingly well for her, too.

Simone – S1mOne

Not a widely-known film, S1mOne came and went in 2002. The impressive cast included Al Pacino, Winona Ryder and Rebecca Romijn, but it was Rachel Roberts who played the pivotal role of Simone, who was a computer program. Now, we know that’s not a robot, but since the only thing missing was probably some decent device drivers, Simone gets her place. This is an interesting one, give it a fair shot before you hate it.

Killing a Muslim Pregnant woman: The German Way

Marwa el-Sherbini, an Egyptian woman asked a German man, Alex W., to clear a swing in a playground so that her child could use it. The German man who sat in the swing, smoking, hurled racial abuse at the woman. Marwa took him to court where Alex was fined for his deeds. This incident happened in 2008.

In 2009, Alex made an appeal in the court and both parties were called in for hearing. Alex smuggled a knife in the court and surprisingly no one noticed. He attacked Marwa and stabbed her 16 times (according to some accounts 18 times). She bled to death in front of her 3 year old son and husband. Marwa's husband was shot by the police in the leg who took him for the attacker initially. Marwa was pregnant at the time of her death. Alex has now been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The incident is just another addition to the chain of anti-Muslim hatred attacks in Europe. It depicts the rising Islamophobia and racial hatred against non-whites and non-Europeans. Western governments and media are to be partly blamed for stereotyping Muslims. Part of the blame also goes to the extremists who bring a bad name to the Muslims by using religion to justify violence. It's shameful that the attack incident was not even much reported in the German media. It's also pathetic for the German authorities who failed to secure the court where the trial was taking place. Moreover life imprisonment is not enough for this crime and death sentence should have been awarded to the killer, regardless of the fact whether such punishments are allowed in Germany or not.

It is time for the western governments and media to stop attacking Islam and clean their own backyard by raising their voice against the injustices that are taking place against the Muslims around the world.

Birth of New Species Witnessed by Scientists

On one of the Galapagos islands whose finches shaped the theories of a young Charles Darwin, biologists have witnessed that elusive moment when a single species splits in two.

In many ways, the split followed predictable patterns, requiring a hybrid newcomer who’d already taken baby steps down a new evolutionary path. But playing an unexpected part was chance, and the newcomer singing his own special song.

This miniature evolutionary saga is described in a paper published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It’s authored by Peter and Rosemary Grant, a husband-and-wife team who have spent much of the last 36 years studying a group of bird species known collectively as Darwin’s finches.

The finches — or, technically, tanagers — have adapted to the conditions of each island in the Galapagos, and they provided Darwin with a clear snapshot of evolutionary divergence when he sailed there on the HMS Beagle. The Grants have pushed that work further, with decades of painstaking observations providing a real-time record of evolution in action. In the PNAS paper, they describe something Darwin could only have dreamed of watching: the birth of a new species.

The species’ forefather was a medium ground finch, or Geospiza fortis, who flew from a neighboring island to the Grants’ island of Daphne Major, and into their nets, in 1981. He “was unusually large, especially in beak width, sang an unusual song” and had a few gene variants that could be traced to another finch species, they wrote. This exotic stranger soon found a mate, who also happened to have a few hybrid genes. The happy couple had five sons.

In the tradition of finches, for whom songs are passed from father to son and used to serenade potential mates, the sons learned their immigrant father’s tunes. But their father’s vocalizations were strange: he’d tried to mimick the natives, but accidentally introduced new notes and inflections, like a person who learns a song in a language he doesn’t understand.

These tunes set the sons apart, as did their unusual size. Though they found mates, it may only have taken a couple generations for the new lineage to ignore — or be ignored by — local finches, and breed only with each other. The Grants couldn’t tell for certain when this started, but they were certain after four generations, when a drought struck the island, killing all but a single brother and sister. They mated with each other, and their children did the same.

No exact rule exists for deciding when a group of animals constitutes a separate species. That question “is rarely if ever asked,” as speciation isn’t something that scientists have been fortunate enough to watch at the precise moment of divergence, except in bacteria and other simple creatures. But after at least three generations of reproductive isolation, the Grants felt comfortable in designating the new lineage as an incipient species.

The future of the species is far from certain. It’s possible that they’ll be out-competed by other finches on the island. Their initial gene pool may contain flaws that will be magnified with time. A chance disaster could wipe them out. The birds might even return to the fold of their parent species, and merge with them through interbreeding.

But whatever happens, their legacy will remain: New species can emerge very quickly — and sometimes all it takes is a song.

1.) Mike Tyson – Lets see…rape, road rage, and possesion of narcotics & DUI. And even punched a paparazzi in the face the week this post was conceived. Mike appears to be just as combustible in the ring as out. many in DLR believe the circumstances behind his Rape conviction are sketchy at best, he was still convicted. 2.) Bernard Hopkins – Before Bernard was on the tips of many tongues as quite possibly being the best pound for pound fighter ever, B-Hop was convicted of Strong-Arm Robbery. B-Hop found boxing in jail, and subsequently turned his life around, and is now retired and promoting multi-million dollar fights.

3.) Riddick Bowe – Convicted of kidnapping, Riddick is known most for his epic trilogy with Evander Holyfield. I believe his victims were no other than his wife and kids….But if they were his than who was he taking them from?

4.) Floyd Mayweather Sr. - The elder Predator Mayweather, was convicted of drug trafficing. After watching those 24/7 episodes, sounds like him and his brother were using most of the product.

5.) Rubin ‘Hurricane” Carter – If you have seen the movie, then you know The Hurricane is innocent. It is always disheartening to see young Black men taken away in the prime of their life.

6.) Sonny Liston – The dude that is known for getting the beat down of all beat downs from Muhammad Ali, not Cassius Clay, was convicted of robbery. White America was so afraid of Ali, and his beliefs, they were willing to get in Liston’s corner during his fight with Ali.

7.) Trevor Berbick – The last man to ever fight Ali, this Jamaican, who fought for Canada in the olympics was convicted of sexually assaulting his children’s babysitter. Trevor Berbick was murdered @ a church in 2006.

8.) Tony Ayala Jr. – Touted by insiders of boxing as a possible all time great, Tony was convicted of burglary & rape just 3 years after his professional career began. After his release, 16 yrs. later, and an attempted return to boxing, Ayala continued to disobey the law and currently in the slammer involving issues with heroin.

9.) Naseem Hamed – “The Prince”. A very exciting boxer in his day was convicted of dangerous driving…The Prince crashed him $300k Mclaren SLR into two other cars while supposedly going really really fast.

10.) Tommy Morrison – The Boxer known for having HIV then not having HIV was convicted of drugs & weapons charges in Arkanses in 1999, after getting pulled over in a brand new corvette.
